Here’s some facts for you… These facts though apply more to Whites, as the laws are designed in Woke Blue cities to let Blacks and minorities steal, not white people. White people can and will be prosecuted at a minimum for the a misdemeanor. The cops and prosecutors, that are usually Soros controlled and detest White people, will go after Whites to the max.
Chicago (Illinois law, Cook County practice)
General theft of $500 or less, not taken off a person, is a Class A misdemeanor (up to 364 days in jail). Over $500 is at least a Class 3 felony (2–5 years). Theft off a person, from a school or church, of government property, or with a prior theft conviction can be a felony even under $500.
Retail theft is tighter. Illinois sets the felony line at $300 of merchandise ($150 for motor fuel). Separate trips can be added together over a year. Under Kim Foxx, Cook County often would not file retail theft as a felony under $1,000. Eileen O’Neill Burke reversed that on day one in December 2024 and told prosecutors to follow the $300 statute. Felony retail-theft filings rose sharply in 2025.
New York (state law, including NYC)
$1,000 or less is petit larceny, a Class A misdemeanor (up to a year). Over $1,000 is grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class E felony. The ladder then climbs: over $3,000 (third degree), over $50,000 (second), over $1 million (first, up to 25 years). You can guess – whites will get time to serve. if you are black, you are free to steal forever. As long as you do not hit these limits, supposedly, and even then, if you cry racism, the offender can still, and do, get off.
Some items are felonies with no dollar floor, or a very low one: credit or debit cards, firearms, public records, and a motor vehicle worth more than $100. Retail thefts under one scheme can be added together once the total clears $1,000. Manhattan and the other boroughs still charge petit larceny; the $1,000 line is the felony cut, not a prosecution cutoff.
Los Angeles (California law)
$950 or less is petty theft, a misdemeanor, under the Prop 47 rule still in Penal Code 490.2. Over $950 is grand theft, a wobbler the DA can file as a misdemeanor or a felony (felony exposure typically 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in county jail).
Prop 36, passed in November 2024, did not move the $950 line. It did let prosecutors charge theft of $950 or less as a felony if the person has two or more prior theft-related convictions, and it lets them add values across stores, victims, and counties to clear $950. Guns and cars are grand theft regardless of price. Nathan Hochman, who replaced George Gascón, has been filing these cases more aggressively than the prior office.
Bottom line: the amounts people quote ($300 retail in Chicago, $500 general theft in Illinois, $1,000 in New York, $950 in California) are felony thresholds, not a license to steal up to that point. Stores can detain, ban, and civilly demand payment at any amount, and police can arrest for a misdemeanor.
