German Chancellor Merz made a huge mistake by insulting President Trump last week. He could have just kept his mouth shut.

Germany’s auto industry was already in deep trouble with massive layoffs, closing and moving factories due to energy costs and regulations. German automakers lost most of their Chinese export market in recent years as Chinese cars became preferred domestically. Now all of their exports to the USA just became much more expensive. So Trump just nuked Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen.

Maybe I have this wrong but most of the German cars that are sold in the US are built here. There’s approximately 1.3 million German cars sold annually in the US and about 800,000 are built here. How much of a negative impact does a tariff increase really have on sales?

• The real nuclear bomb will come when Trump removes the US from NATO. I can’t wait to see Europe be forced to defend itself. No longer will they be able to afford their nanny states and boast about their wonderful healthcare system. We’re essentially subsidizing them and I want it to stop. – John W
