A high school teacher in Largo, Fla., is accused of abusing four students after she allegedly sprayed them with aerosol disinfectant because they weren’t wearing their face masks properly, WFLA-TV reports.
According to a police report cited by WFLA-TV, Christina Reszetar said the students were not wearing their masks correctly and refused to do so when she asked. She is accused of then aiming the disinfectant “into the path of their faces and bodies.
Reszetar, who teaches Learning Disabled Math at Largo High School and has been a teacher for 21 years, was escorted from Largo High School and booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Wednesday.
She was charged with four counts of felony child abuse without great bodily harm.
“I think I can fairly characterize this as a severely misguided attempt at discipline,” the judge said.
Reszetar spent more than a day behind bars before she was released on her own recognizance after midnight on Jan. 8.
The judge in the case decided she could be released without bond because she doesn’t have a criminal record.
The teacher is still employed by the Pinellas County School District. Reszetar will have to go to trial if the state moves forward with charges.
In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, Pinellas County schools require students and staff to wear face coverings and maintain 6 feet of social distance.
