GM DOESN’T WANT YOU CHECKING YOUR OWN OIL ANYMORE — THEY HAVE REMOVED THE DIPSTICK FROM NEW TRUCKS

GM DOESN’T WANT YOU CHECKING YOUR OWN OIL ANYMORE — THEY HAVE REMOVED THE DIPSTICK FROM NEW TRUCKS General Motors is removing one of the most basic tools under the hood of its new trucks: The oil dipstick. No pulling it out. No wiping it clean. No physically checking your oil yourself. Instead, GM says newer engine hardware made it difficult to package a traditional dipstick, so engineers replaced it with an electronic oil-level sensor that lets drivers check their oil from inside the cab. But it was the way they explained it that really set people off. “We were able to delete the dipstick…” Delete the dipstick. Replace it with electronics.

Trust the sensor. And truck owners are already roasting the decision: “So now I need a computer to tell me something a $10 metal stick has done perfectly for 100 years?” “Just another simple part they turned into an expensive sensor that can fail” “Nobody asked for this. Give me the damn dipstick back” To GM, it’s new technology and convenience. To pissed off truck owners, it’s another dirt simple mechanical feature being replaced by something electronic they’ll eventually have to trust… or potentially repair. Why does every “upgrade” somehow end with drivers having less control over their own vehicles?
