The FDA just approved the first mRNA-based seasonal flu vaccine — Moderna’s mFLUSIVA (also known as mRNA-1010) — for adults 50 and older. Full traditional approval for ages 50–64. Accelerated approval for 65 and up, with Moderna still required to run more studies to prove it actually works in the age group that actually dies from flu.
The company is already talking about doses showing up at select retailers in the coming weeks for the 2026–27 season. Same messenger RNA platform that brought you Spikevax. Same lipid nanoparticles. Same manufacturer that spent years insisting myocarditis was rare, transient, and totally worth it.

The Numbers They Want You to Focus On
In a Phase 3 trial of more than 40,000 adults 50+, mFLUSIVA was about 26–27% more effective at preventing lab-confirmed flu-like illness than a standard-dose traditional flu shot. That’s the relative efficacy number the press releases wave around. Absolute numbers were still modest: hundreds of cases in each arm. For seniors 65+, they leaned on antibody data versus Sanofi’s high-dose shot and accelerated the approval.
Side effects look familiar if you paid attention during the COVID years: injection-site pain, swollen lymph nodes in the same arm, fatigue, headache, muscle or joint pain, nausea or vomiting, and fever. Rates were higher than with conventional flu shots. One trial report noted a case of perimyocarditis. The usual “mostly mild and short-lived” language is already out in force.

Scroll the replies and quote tweets and you’ll find the same refrain that has defined the post-2021 landscape: “Never again.” People who took traditional flu shots for decades and still got sick are drawing a hard line at the mRNA version. Others who watched family members develop heart issues, neurological problems, or just felt permanently “off” after the COVID series are treating this as more of the same technology under a different brand name.
The skepticism isn’t fringe. It is the lived experience of millions who noticed that the flu somehow became both deadly enough to demand annual shots and mild enough that the shots rarely seemed to stop it.
