Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare announced a lockdown on Wednesday after thousands of people protested in the capital of Honiara demanding his resignation. Violence erupted, buildings were set on fire and there are reports of looting.

PM Sogavare angered many in 2019, particularly leaders of the most populous province Malaita, when he cut the country’s diplomatic ties with Taiwan, switching its diplomatic allegiance to China instead.
