A Tampa woman hits a $2,600 Pick 4. She puts the winning ticket in the mail to a relative in Fort Lauderdale to help cover funeral expenses. The ticket never arrives.
Instead, a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier named Lakaysha Lockhart, 28, of Hollywood, Florida, allegedly pulled it out of the mail, walked into the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office on June 19, and cashed it herself.
She admitted it after her arrest on July 23.
This is not a victimless crime or some clever hustle. This is a government employee stealing from a family trying to bury someone.
According to the Florida Lottery and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, the original player reported the missing ticket after it failed to show up. Investigators quickly traced the redemption to Lockhart, a Level 2 city carrier working out of the Oakland Park post office. She had only been with the Postal Service since April 2025.
After her arrest she confessed to taking the ticket and claiming the prize. She now faces multiple felony charges including grand theft, dealing in stolen property, filing a false claim for payment, two counts of unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and mail theft. The cases are being prosecuted in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties. She was released after posting bail and has not yet entered a plea. USPS says she remains employed but is currently off duty.
Let’s be clear about what happened here. A family was dealing with death. Someone tried to help by sending a legitimate lottery win through the U.S. Mail. A postal worker decided that money belonged to her instead.
There is no gray area. There is no “she needed it more” excuse that lands. This is pure theft from people already in pain, carried out by someone whose job is to deliver the mail, not loot it.
Stories like this are why trust in institutions keeps collapsing. When a letter carrier can grab a winning ticket out of the stream and cash it with almost no immediate friction, ordinary Americans have every right to ask harder questions about what else might be disappearing — or being mishandled — inside that same system.
Lockhart got caught. Most people who steal from the mail never do. That should not comfort anyone.
The Florida Lottery has stressed that it protects prize integrity and that every ticket supports education. Fine. But the real issue here is not the lottery’s back-end security. It is the fact that a trusted federal employee treated a grieving family’s mail like an opportunity.
No shame. No honor. Just another reminder that the people we are told to trust with our most basic systems sometimes cannot be trusted at all.

- I can guarantee that this is not the first time this person has stolen money through the mail system. It’s just that this time they got caught. Despite getting caught I bet this person will only barely get any real punishment. – Emerald Apple
