Matt Drudge never came out. The public record still reads like a man who spent a decade sharing Miami Beach addresses with another man, then turned the old Trump sword on the man who picked a fight with that world.
Drudge used to be the sword. Now he writes the hit list.
In 2016 Ted Cruz called the Drudge Report “an attack site for the Donald Trump campaign.” In 2018 Trump called Drudge “a great gentleman.” By October 2024 the same page was running “American Psycho” over a photo of Trump swaying at a Pennsylvania town hall, and “WALL STREET: 72 PERCENT CHANCE SHE WINS” under a picture of Kamala Harris. AllSides, which used to rate the site Center, now has it at Lean Left. The readers noticed before the raters did.
The man, the Beach, the deed
Drudge has denied he is gay. In a New York magazine interview he said, “False. False. False. I do not love sex with men.” He once claimed he was close to marrying a woman “with boobs.” That is his line. The paper trail is not his line.
The Miami Herald, picked up across the gay press in January 2016, reported that Drudge quitclaimed a 4,600-square-foot house on 4.5 acres in Redland to Juan Carlos Alvarado for $10. Drudge had bought it for $700,000 cash. County records showed the two men had shared addresses for 11 years: a Collins Avenue condo, a $1.57 million house in the Venetian Isles on Miami Beach, then the compound on Southwest 157th Avenue. Out magazine had already parked him on its 2009 Power 50 “glass closet” list. A 2001 Miami New Times piece quoted him: “I go to bars. I go to straight bars, I go to gay bars.” NNDB lists a Washington landscaper, David Cohen, as an ex-lover by Cohen’s account.
He is not a Miami Beach resident on the current record. He sold the Beach house around 2013 and bunkered in Redland, south Miami-Dade. He listed that compound for $2.9 million in October 2023. The Beach years are the ones that sit next to the Alvarado deed.
Trump picked the fight. Drudge picked the side.
Trump in 2016 held a rainbow flag and treated same-sex marriage as settled. The break with that crowd started July 26, 2017, when he tweeted a ban on transgender service members. The formal memo landed in March 2018. The Supreme Court let the policy stand in January 2019. Second-term orders against sex changes for minors came later. The culture war was already on.
Drudge never gave the interview. Watchers date the hard flip to the first week of August 2019. B.J. Rudell, tracking old screenshots for the Washington Times, said the page went from positive Trump headlines to negative ones almost overnight, around the El Paso and Dayton shootings and before the impeachment inquiry fully opened. A Hill source later called the grudge personal, not ideological. Conservatives who had watched the site for 20 years read it the other way. The man who lived on the Beach with Alvarado stopped carrying water the year Trump’s military policy stuck, then spent the next six years punishing him.
The headline file
Summer 2019: “NO NEW WALL AT ALL!” December 2019, impeachment: “TRUMP ON BRINK.” The Washington Times had already logged the alarm. Josh Bernstein dubbed it “the Sludge Report.” Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft wrote “Dear Matt Drudge — Please come home.” Jesse Watters said the page was playing up gaffes and burying wins. Dan Bongino, December 2019: “Drudge has abandoned you. I NEVER will.”
Trump answered on Twitter. April 2020: “I gave up on Drudge (a really nice guy) long ago.” September 14, 2020: “Drudge is down 40% plus since he became Fake News… Lost ALL Trumpers.” Next day: “Our people have all left Drudge. He is a confused MESS… Down 51%.” Tucker Carlson, July 24, 2020, said Drudge was “now firmly a man of the progressive left,” and that the page had started to look like the Daily Beast.
The 2024 file is the one readers screenshotted. May 30, after the Manhattan verdict, the banner was the word GUILTY written 34 times in red. September 10, mid-debate, “The End,” under an AI image of Trump ringed by cats. September 20, a photo cropped to look like a salute over “TRUMP: BLAME THE JEWS IF I LOSE.” October, “American Psycho,” then the Harris victory tease. Days before the election Drudge joined the press in treating a Trump line about Liz Cheney as a call for a firing squad. The New York Post called that one false.
May 1, 2025, the White House stood up its own wire in the old Drudge layout. Drudge hit back the same day: “IT TAKES AN ENTIRE WEST WING TO COMPETE WITH DRUDGE… TRUMP LAUNCHING HIS OWN DRUDGE REPORT… USING TAXPAYER DOLLARS!” Laura Loomer posted that the wire was the West Wing trolling “the anti-Trump Drudge Report.”
AllSides reviewers, left, center, and right, agreed the framing had gone left. Headlines they flagged: “MAGA Down,” “Tired-Looking Trump,” “Master of Disaster,” “YOU’RE FIRED,” and the nickname “the Don.” One center reviewer said the page presents Trump as “an evil idiot.” A left reviewer noted the site looked pro-LGBT.
The numbers
Comscore, via TheRighting and TheWrap: 2.399 million unique visitors in July 2019, 1.488 million in July 2020. That is a 38 percent drop, in a year when almost every other political site was up. August was worse, 2.424 million to 1.415 million, down 42 percent. Trump’s 40 percent figure was the Comscore number. The 51 percent claim was his.
AllSides’ August 2025 link count: 56 percent of Drudge’s curated sources from the left, 22 percent center, 11 percent from the right. An April 2026 editorial panel scored the rhetoric at Lean Left, −2.56. Combined rating as of this month: Lean Left, −1.74, down from a prior Center score of +0.93. AllSides still marks that rating low-confidence. The headline file does not need their permission.
On X the verdict has been in for years. @amuse, April 2025, wrote that Drudge “sold out” in 2019–20 and that Republicans still reading the page, Speaker Johnson included, explains a lot. Rank-and-file posts now lump the site with the Times and CNN without blinking. One September 2026 user called it a propaganda machine for the Democrats. Another said MAGA sources its news from “far left fake news media, like Drudge Report.” That sentence would have been a punch line in 2016. It is a description now.
Drudge still will not say why. He does not do interviews. The page does the talking, and it has been talking against Trump since the late summer of 2019, through the wall fight, the impeachments, the verdict, the cats, and the second term. The Beach deed is public. The denial is public. The headlines are public. Readers can do the arithmetic.
Sgt. Pat: He had the hat, the siren, and the biggest link list on the right. Then Trump drew a line on men in the women’s barracks. Drudge picked the other side of the line and has been swinging at him ever since. The audience started leaving. The fedora stayed.
