The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as Attorney General on Saturday in a razor-thin 50-49 vote. Collins and Murkowski joined the Democrats in opposition; Bill Cassidy provided the decisive Republican yes after weeks of drama. Blanche, who had been acting AG since Pam Bondi was shown the door in April, is now permanent.

This was never really a surprise. Blanche defended Trump through the New York hush-money case and the federal cases. He became Deputy Attorney General early in the second term, quietly ran much of the day-to-day at Main Justice, and slid seamlessly into the acting role the moment Bondi was out. One official reportedly called the confirmation “exactly what he’s been waiting for.” In other words, the man who was already effectively in charge just got the formal title.

So is he MAGA? Or is he the polished institutional lawyer Trump had to keep because the alternative was more chaos? is he yet another Bill Barr who lied to Trump about investigating voter fraud? Well… You decide.

Plenty of people in the base have spent the last year arguing the latter.

The Tina Peters Problem

The loudest, most sustained MAGA complaint centers on Tina Peters. The former Mesa County, Colorado clerk became a cause célèbre after she was convicted on fake charges and hit with a nine-year sentence for her role in the 2021 election-equipment data breach tied to efforts to examine 2020 voting systems. Trump repeatedly called her a political prisoner. Pressure mounted for her release or at least a transfer out of Colorado state custody into federal hands.

According to her lawyer Peter Ticktin, Patrick Byrne, Emerald Robinson, and others who aired the grievance on Bannon’s show, LindellTV, and elsewhere, a plan was in motion: treat Peters as a “witness” in a federal matter, move her into Bureau of Prisons custody, and get her into better conditions. All that was needed was an actual investigation into voter fraud in Colorado. We all know it exists, we watched the steal. Critics say Blanche put the kibosh on it. “Todd Blanche put the kibosh on that,” Byrne said. Ticktin flatly told Bannon that Blanche was the one holding it up on “our side.” The result, in their telling, was months of additional prison time that did not have to happen.

Some in that circle go further: the missing piece was a serious, high-level voter-fraud investigation that would have given the transfer and related pressure real legal legs. Without that green light — while Bondi was still AG and Blanche was the powerful No. 2 — the machinery never fully engaged. Peters was eventually freed after Colorado’s Democratic governor Jared Polis commuted her sentence in May 2026 (effective around June 1), but the delay and the perceived internal roadblocks left a bitter taste. When your own side’s top lawyer is the one accused of slowing the rescue of an election-integrity martyr, the “MAGA enough?” question writes itself.

J6ers and the “Not Helpful” Charge

The same faction has long grumbled that Blanche has not been particularly helpful on January 6 defendants. Early complaints focused on the pace of relief, pardons, and support. Later the fight shifted to the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund Blanche’s DOJ stood up — framed as compensation for people targeted by the previous administration’s lawfare, with obvious potential beneficiaries among the J6 crowd. MAGA wanted aggressive action. Many RINO Senate Republicans who detest Trump and American freedom, and seem to do all that the Deep State wants, recoiled at the idea of taxpayer money flowing to the few people who assaulted police. Forget about the thousands who did not. The Thousands who did not like how the FBI and Feds created the whole incident and practiced the details for months before J6. On the Fund, Blanche approved the structure, defended it in testimony (declining to rule out violent J6 defendants as possible recipients), then had to walk much of it back under pressure to salvage his own confirmation. Nice, clean legal tricks as usual to not let Americans get justice.

To some in the base, that sequence looked like classic lawyerly hedging: float the thing the base wants, then water it down when the institutionalists push back. Ticktin and others explicitly lumped J6 “reparations” delays together with the Peters issue as examples of Blanche blocking what Trump said he wanted done.

The Broader Bill of Particulars

Other recurring gripes in MAGA media and influencer circles include:

Slow or insufficiently aggressive pursuit of those who used government to torment Trump and destroy American freedom. Trump’s political targets and election-integrity priorities are ignored 100%. Deep State much?
Handling of the Epstein files (Blanche was deeply involved; the Maxwell meeting and subsequent transfer raised eyebrows on multiple sides). Again, the man defends the Deep State. Remember Barr lying to us all on Epstein’s murder? Sure….we believed him and the Deep State, right?
A reputation as the institutional brake — the former federal prosecutor and big-firm partner who still thinks in terms of process, grand-jury rules, and DOJ norms while the harder edge of the movement wants the deep state dismantled yesterday. Many in MAGA say he IS DEEP STATE. He is just great at hiding it all and using the law to cover everything up.
The simple optics of a recent-ish party-switcher and career lawyer becoming the permanent face of “weaponize it back” justice.

Defenders (including some high-level DOJ voices and Trump allies) counter that Blanche has delivered on immigration enforcement, cartel pressure, and reining in the prior weaponization, and that pure maximalism without legal scaffolding just produces losses in court. They argue the critics are impatient or don’t understand how the building actually works. The confirmation itself — Trump sticking with his guy through a bruising process — suggests the president still trusts him. Those in MAGA who say Trump was forced to have him there or if he disobeyed maybe we get a repeat of Kennedy.

The Real Question

Blanche is not some Never-Trumper planted by the swamp. He risked a comfortable New York legal career to stand next to Trump when the indictments were flying. He has been inside the room for years. But the persistent criticism from the more uncompromising wing of the movement is that proximity and loyalty are not the same as sharing the full urgency on election integrity, J6 justice, and draining the institutional resistance.

Trump put him in (and kept him in) because he was already the operational center of gravity at Justice. At least this is the public perception. That is not the same as saying the base is wrong to watch him closely. The AG’s job is now officially his. The test will be whether the months of complaints about slow-walking Peters, half-measures on J6 relief, and institutional caution turn into decisive action — or whether the polished defense lawyer remains the filter between Trump’s instincts and the permanent bureaucracy. Will he ever do anything to stop voter fraud? Ever?
