- “Underwhelming minority” is wrong. Hard numbers show about twenty-three percent of Black adults carry a felony conviction. When you add people whose only record is a misdemeanor plus those with juvenile delinquency findings you reach roughly forty to forty-five percent who have ever been found guilty of something. That is close to half the population, hardly a tiny leftover sliver. Flipping the numbers means a slim majority, maybe fifty-five to sixty percent, have no conviction record at all, but calling the convicted share “underwhelming” misleads the reader because it makes a big slice of real people sound insignificant. - So if you played 4 rounds of Russian roulette, with just one bullet… that would be marginally less likely to kill you? I.e. 4 x 6 chambers = 24 potential clicks and one bullet… VA
- This is why liberals need to accept mass incarceration if we’re to have safe communities. A colorblind tough-on-crime criminal justice system would imprison ~5% of black males per generation, in perpetuity. Result: about double the number of black males currently imprisoned. SJ
- That is a crazy murder stat. That’s like 4-5% of the population that will **murder** someone (and be caught and convicted of it)? Bukele imprisoned 1-2% of his population with a rampaging gang problem and everyone got all up in arms about it. 5% murderers?? 34% felons?? DC
- What’s its interesting is that this is for felony convictions alone. Factor in thr fact that not everyone gets caught committing felonies and the real number could be closer to 40% or more.. – Hylander
- When you consider that the investigative clearance rate is only about 60% and many of those are acquitted or plead down to lesser changes, the real figure is probably ~6% (although some of those may be repeat murderers).
