- I had a colonoscopy and upper GI where they found three very small polyps that were snared and removed. Other than that it was simple and both procedures were less than 30 minutes. I paid a copay of $1,500 which went to the surgical center and $350 to the gastroenterologist. Keep in mind this was last July and I just received a bill from the anesthesiologist that says $122.13. I have not received anything prior yet. Apparently this is past due. Trust me, I would’ve noticed this sooner if I had received it. For less than 30 minutes, actually 25 minutes the anesthesiologist charged my insurance $31,500 and why you ask? Because three tiny polyps turned a routine colonoscopy into what they called a surgical procedure, by using a snare and just simply removing them. No surgical incision was made. They can now charge an ungodly amount and get away with it! I have spoken with my insurance company and was shocked when they said what’s the problem? We paid it. You don’t have to. It made me realize that this is why insurance premiums are unrealistic and co-pays are ever increasing. So after the anesthesiologist received over $31,000 in payment, they are still insisting that I pay my $122.13! I’m at a complete loss for words and feel this has to stop! If I had had a kidney transplant or heart transplant, I would understand this cost. But a 25 minute colonoscopy and upper G.I., you’ve got to be kidding me! – S4
- In the mid 1990s, insurance paid for all of it – the only out-of-pocket costs were copays of $20 for office visits prior to delivery and prenatal vitamins; it was also clear if the baby were a boy circumcision would be out-of-pocket. Obamacare destroyed private industry.
- Most people having babies are on welfare so the hospitals don’t know how to bill people who pay their medical bills. Those are the same bills they send to Medicare and Medicaid and they get paid no question asked
- This is absolutely true, there is no transparency and duplicate billing is common. I work for a collection agency. When it comes to healthcare accounts, our ONLY job is to help explain and get back to the provider to clear up issues. Oh … and many patients are finding out they even owe money the first time from us! There are some healthcare providers that are so often wrong in their billing that we audit before even calling patients to clean up the amount owed first. – Abby
