Sophie Cunningham took a hard elbow to the face from Minnesota Lynx forward Nia Coffey on Sunday. Clear contact. Direct hit. Cunningham goes backward. Officials review it for a possible hostile act… and then pin the defensive foul on Cunningham.
You can’t make this up. But in the modern WNBA, you don’t have to.
Kevin Bass put it bluntly: the league is “patently an anti-white racist sports league — hostile toward talented straight white players.” After watching the same film the rest of the country saw, it’s hard to argue with him. This wasn’t some 50/50 bang-bang play. Coffey’s elbow found Cunningham’s face. The league’s solution? Punish the white girl who dared speak common sense about biological men in women’s sports.
The Real Crime Wasn’t the Elbow
Cunningham’s actual offense happened weeks earlier. She told ESPN she wants to protect young girls from competing against biological males. “I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” She called it common sense. For that, she got the full progressive treatment: boos, outside protests, and Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve showing up in a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt like it was a political rally instead of a basketball game.
So when Coffey’s elbow connected and the whistle went against Cunningham, a lot of fans didn’t see a simple officiating error. They saw a league that has spent years looking the other way when physical “messages” are delivered to the wrong kind of player.

This Isn’t New — Ask Caitlin Clark
Cunningham has said the quiet part out loud before. She has repeatedly accused opponents of targeting her teammate Caitlin Clark and charged that the league and its referees “do nothing to protect her.” Hard fouls, knees, cheap shots, and no-calls have followed Clark around the league for two seasons. The pattern is hard to ignore: the bigger the star, the more conservative or traditional her public image, the less protection she seems to receive.
Clark is the most marketable player the WNBA has ever had. She and players like Cunningham are the reason arenas fill and ratings jump. Yet the league’s culture still treats them like interlopers who need to be reminded of their place. Physical play is part of basketball. Selective blindness by officials when the recipient is a straight white woman who refuses to chant the latest progressive slogans is something else.
The Irony Is Thick Enough to Choke On
The same league that lectures America about “inclusion,” “safety,” and “equity” somehow cannot find an offensive foul when a player gets an elbow in the face. The same voices that demand zero tolerance for any perceived slight against favored identity groups suddenly discover the beauty of “physical basketball” when the victim is Sophie Cunningham.
It’s almost impressive. The WNBA has managed to turn player safety into a political loyalty test. Defend biological reality and protect girls’ sports, and suddenly the elbows find you and the whistle finds you too.
This isn’t about one bad call. It’s about a pattern. Talented straight white players who refuse to genuflect keep absorbing the contact while the league’s progressive hierarchy looks the other way — or worse, rewards the other side with the shirt and the narrative. Fans notice. Ordinary Americans notice. The more the league prioritizes ideology over fairness and competence, the more it confirms exactly what critics like Bass are saying out loud.
Sophie Cunningham stayed in the game. She didn’t melt down. She didn’t issue a tearful apology for noticing that men and women are different. That’s the part that really bothers the people running this circus. She keeps showing up, keeps talking sense, and keeps making them look small.
And every time they reward the elbow and punish the woman who took it, they make the case for her a little stronger.
